The Proof Platinum American Eagles debuted from the United States Mint in 1997 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum coins. From 1997 to 2008, the US Mint issued the coins in these four weights, but 2008 was a unique year. Not only did it mark the end of yet another design series for the coins, it also marked the final issue of the 1/4 oz weight of the coin. Today, you have the chance to buy 2008-W 1/4 oz Proof Platinum American Eagles in near-perfect condition online at Silver.com.

The Proof Platinum American Eagle is the only coin from the United States Mint that uses new designs on one side each year. From 1997 to 2016, the reverse design element was altered each year for fresh appeal. Between 2018 and 2020, the series switched to feature new obverse designs of Liberty each year. In all cases, Proof Platinum American Eagles are produced by the West Point Mint with a “W” mint mark.
The US Mint originally issued the three fractional-ounce coins in both bullion and proof from 1997 to 2008. In 2009, the US Mint suspended all four coins in the bullion series and the fractional-ounce coins in the proof collection. Even when the bullion coins returned, the fractional-ounce coins did not.
On the obverse side of the 2008-W 1/4 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Created in 1997 by John Mercanti, this effigy of Liberty is based on the Statue of Liberty and focuses on her gaze as she wears a crown and holds her torch overhead in her right hand.
The reverse face of 2008-W 1/4 oz Proof Platinum Eagles bears an image of Lady Justice. In this design, Justice is flanked by the American bald eagle to watch over her. This design represents the Judicial Branch and was the third and final design in the Foundations of Democracy Series that depicted the three branches of the federal government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.
These 2008-W 1/4 oz Proof Platinum American Eagles are in near-perfect condition. PR69 coins have full, original mint luster and two minor detracting flaws at most. Examples of acceptable flaws include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines. The DCAM designation means the coins have contrasting strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
