Gold American Buffalo coins debuted from the United States Mint in 2006 as the first-ever 24-karat gold coins from America. The Gold Buffalo revived the coveted design from the Buffalo Nickel issued by the US Mint from 1913 to 1938, that of a Native American on the obverse and a buffalo on the reverse. The Celebration Series was a means of promoting numismatic coins connected to special events and celebrations. The 2008 Gold American Buffalo Coin was part of that Celebration Series and issued in timing with the Lunar New Year in February 2008. These 1 oz Gold American Buffalo coins are beautifully housed inside of red United States Mint boxes with an included Certificate of Authenticity.
Each 2008 1 oz Gold American Buffalo Coin in this listing comes to you in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are housed in red boxes because tradition within Chinese culture typically includes the gifting of money to others for Lunar New Year. That gift of money is often given to others in a red envelope, hence the US Mint’s use of a red box for this celebratory release.
On the obverse of 1 oz Gold American Buffalo Coins is the design of a Native American figure. Fraser created this right-profile portrait by combining the facial features of three prominent Native American leaders in the early 20th century. The design includes the engravings of a date mark and the word “Liberty.”
The reverse side of 2008 1 oz Gold American Buffalo Coins features the left-profile figure of an American bison. Also known as a buffalo, these are the largest land mammals on the North American continent and once roamed widely throughout the Central Plains and American West. This design was created using Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
