As the United States Mint celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Silver American Eagle in 2006, it did so with many commemorative and one-time issues of the Silver Eagle coins. One of the issues which was not intended as a one-time release was the new Burnished Silver Eagle. These specimens have unique beauty on a level not featured on the typical proof release.
Burnished Silver American Eagles are specially treated and handled by the US Mint. The blanks are first loaded into drums and spun with a burnishing agent that gives the blanks a special polish through content to provide additional shine in the finish. Each blank is removed by gloved hand, loaded individually into coining presses, and removed by gloved hand after striking.
On the obverse of the 2008-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle is the iconic image of Walking Liberty. Created by Adolph A. Weinman for the circulation 50-cent piece in 1916, it remained on that coin until 1947 and was revived for use on the Silver Eagle coins in 1986.
The reverse of the 2008 Burnished Silver American Eagle coin features the design of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Based upon the Great Seal of the United States, it features a bald eagle behind the national shield. The eagle holds the arrows of war in one talon but looks to the olive branch of peace in its other talon.
All 2008-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle coins listed here arrive in their original US Mint display box with an included Certificate of Authenticity. The 2008 issue was the third in total and last until 2011. The 2008 and 2010 issues were canceled due to a shortage of silver blanks and the US Mint’s need to focus on the demand for bullion Silver Eagles.
