In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt personally met with Irish-born artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to ask for his help redesigning American gold coins. The image that Saint-Gaudens developed is today considered the most beautiful to ever appear on an American coin. However, it was never featured as Saint-Gaudens envisioned it in his mind. Right now, Saint-Gaudens design comes to life on the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Coin, available to purchase online at Silver.com.

The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle coin from the United States Mint was struck not to bring back Saint-Gaudens’ iconic design, but rather to bring it to life in the manner he originally intended. Saint-Gaudens’ original designs in 1907 called for a high-relief striking, but the US Mint lacked the proper technology at the time to bring his vision to life.
Saint-Gaudens originally designed his depiction of Lady Liberty for use on a high-relief coin, but in 1907 the United States Mint did not possess the technology to make his dream a reality. Using 24-karat gold, rather than the standard 22-karat gold of most US coins, the US Mint was able to strike an ultra-high relief coin that brings Liberty to life on the obverse side of the coin. The coin features a slightly concave face, and unique engraving along the coin’s edge that reads “E Pluribus Unum.”
On the obverse of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle is the image of Lady Liberty as she strides confidently forth from the nation’s capital. Engravings include the word “Liberty” and the year 2009 in the Roman numerals “MMIX.” There are also 50 stars surrounding Liberty’s image.
The reverse includes the American bald eagle as it flies over the rising sun, its outstretched rays streaking toward the edges of the coin. The nation of issue, face value, and national motto of “In God We Trust” are all engraved on this side.
