President Theodore Roosevelt summoned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to a meeting in 1905 to ask the Irish-born artist and sculptor to help lead a renaissance in American coinage. Saint-Gaudens responded with impressive designs for the Indian Head $10 Eagle and the famous $20 Gold Double Eagle.
The depiction of Lady Liberty that Saint-Gaudens developed and refined in 1907-1908 first appeared on the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle between 1907 and 1933. However, his original design was meant to be featured on a high-relief coin. The United States Mint did not possess the technology at the time to realize his vision.
Fast forward to 2009, and the US Mint possessed the advanced technology to realize that dream on the 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle coin. On the obverse side is Saint-Gaudens’ image of Lady Liberty, striding forward confidently into a brighter future. The sun’s rays are visible behind her, with a torch in her right hand guiding the way.
The reverse side of the coin bears his depiction of the bald eagle flying over a setting sun. In his image, the eagle has its wings spread as it soars over the sun. The setting sun is visible along the bottom, with its rays reaching out toward the edges of the coin.
