Augustus Saint-Gaudens is the man behind some of America’s most iconic coin designs. When President Theodore Roosevelt called for a revitalization of American gold coins in 1905, it was Saint-Gaudens who delivered some of the best designs.
He designed the famous Indian Head $10 coin and the original $20 Gold Double Eagle design. His Lady Liberty image appears on the nation’s official gold bullion coin, the American Gold Eagle, and is now honored as it was meant to be on the 2009 Ultra High Relief $20 Gold Double Eagle.
The obverse side of the coin features Saint-Gaudens original depiction of Lady Liberty, struck in ultra-high relief as he envisioned it in 1907. On the reverse side, his original Gold Double Eagle design of a bald eagle soaring over the setting sun.
