The gold coins of the Gold American Eagle Series were, in 1986, the purest gold coins the United States Mint had issued in more than 150 years. Gold Eagles have 22-karat gold content that equates to 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver per coin. The last gold coins the mint issued were the Gold $20 Double Eagles in 1933, and the last gold coins with higher purity than the Gold Eagle were the coins of the US Eagle denomination issued in 1833.

The design element includes a ring of 50 stars around the design element, sun rays at her back, and the U.S. Capitol Building at her feet.
On the reverse field of the 2010 Gold Eagle Coin is a depiction of American bald eagles. This design captures a family unit with a female eagle watching over hatchlings in the nest as a male eagle soars overhead.
