When investors and collectors want the finest Lunar-inspired designs in the precious metals industry, they turn to the Perth Mint of Australia. The Perth Mint created this hot trend in coin design in 1996 with the release of Lunar Series coins, and continues the tradition today in its Lunar Series II program. Perth Mint’s Lunar Series II coin program represented a restart of the popular lunar-inspired coin designs the mint had originally unveiled in 1996. The Lunar Series I program was introduced in 1996 with the Year of the Mouse design, and covered all 12 animals in the Zodiac with unique designs.
Lunar Series II coins feature all-new designs from the original program, and each is more intricate than the originals. The Year of the Tiger is the third in the Zodiac, and features the world’s largest cat species as its design inspiration.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image of a tiger laying in a field, just below a tree. Engravings on this side include the Chinese symbol for tiger, the “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint, and the phrase “Year of the Tiger.”
The obverse features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley. Each of these coins has engravings on this face that include Her Majesty’s name, the nation of issue, the face value of the coin, the year of issue, and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
Perth Mint was founded by the ruling British Empire in 1898 as the third and final mint in the Royal Mint system after the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint. In 1970 control of the mint was transferred to the state of Western Australia, and Perth Mint operates outside the Royal Australian Mint system.
