The Grand Canyon itself is the result of the Colorado River flowing through the area, grinding away at the rock around at. At its deepest point, the canyon plunges one mile deep, while its widest point is 18-miles across. The larger Grand Canyon National Park covers 1.2 million acres of land across two counties in northern Arizona: Coconino and Mohave. The park was officially established as a national park in 1919.

2010 5 oz Grand Canyon Silver Coins are part of the America the Beautiful coin series. These particular coins were released during the first production year as the fourth of the five coins released during 2010. Each year of the ATB series includes five new coins.

On the reverse side is a depiction of the Colorado River as it winds through the region. Visible on either side of the river are the steep rock cliffs that characterize the area. Engravings read “Arizona,” “Grand Canyon,” and “E Pluribus Unum.” President George Washington’s left-profile portrait graces the obverse side.
