Arizona’s Grand Canyon is a massive gouge in the Earth’s surface that displays the power of water and time. As the Colorado River cut a path through the southern US over thousands of years, it cut through the powerful rocks to carve out the canyon. The Grand Canyon is, at its widest point, 18-miles across.
The 56-coin series known as America the Beautiful is a program that honors moments, monuments, and places from across the country. In total, the series will honor one monument or moment from American history in each of the 50 states, the five national territories, and the federal district of Washington DC. America the Beautiful was launched in 2010, and is scheduled to run through 2021.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image the Colorado River sweeping through the Grand Canyon. The obverse features President George Washington’s left-profile portrait. Created in 1932 by John Flanagan, it was inspired by William Cousins’ 1785 bust of Washington.
Each coin in this listing is available in near-perfect condition. With its full, original luster still visible, these coins have a maximum of two contact marks located outside the primary visual area of the coin’s surface.
The United States Mint produces its America the Beautiful coins at two of its facilities. The Philadelphia Mint produces coins without a mint mark, while San Francisco Mint coins have an “S” mint mark.
