The US Mint has long been known as one of the finest producers of coins in the world. The America the Beautiful series of coins does a good job of affirming that reputation through the unmatched quality of the artwork found on the coins as well as the attention to detail present on each and every image. This series of coins is aimed at promoting the natural beauty of the United States, and what better way to do that than through the celebration of America’s National Parks.
The brain-child of Theodore Roosevelt, the United States’ National Parks System had the sole purpose of protecting the natural wonders of this great country. Many decades later, we can still find countless National Parks all over the US. Few of these National Parks are more well-known or visited than Yellowstone, which makes it the perfect subject for the ATB’s inaugural series.
Yellowstone, located in Wyoming, was officially founded in 1878 and is one of the oldest National Parks in the system. The park itself consists of more than 2 million square miles, so naturally it also has a diverse array of landscapes and wildlife. Two things that are most commonly associated with Yellowstone, however, are the plentiful geysers and herds of Bison.
The reverse side of the 5 oz ATB Yellowstone features the image of a grown Bison standing in front of the most famous geyser in the world—Old Faithful. Poking out of the background is part of the many mountains sprawling all over the park. Inscribed on the reverse are the words “Wyoming”, “Yellowstone”, and “E Pluribus Unum.” Found towards the center bottom is an inscription that reads “2010” for the year the coin was minted.
As intriguing as it is, the coin’s obverse is modeled to look identical to the obverse side of a US quarter. The unmistakable profile image of George Washington is surrounded by all the familiar inscriptions you will find on most every quarter. Even the $0.25 face value is the same on the 5 oz ATB Yellowstone as it is on an actual quarter.
