The United States Mint is legally obligated to strike its Gold Eagle and Silver Eagle coins in the bullion version to meet investor demand each year. As a result, both the burnished and proof versions of these two coins were suspended in 2009 so the mint could redirect its available blanks to the production of bullion coins.
When the Proof Gold American Eagles returned in 2010, the status quo had been upended and the 1/10 oz coin was no longer the collector favorite. The 1 oz coin had the highest mintage figure for the year, more than 15,000 coins above the 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz coins, and more than 5,000 greater than the 1/10 oz coin.
These 2010 1/2 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins had their highest mintage figure since 1995. The US Mint established mintage caps for all of the individual Proof Gold Eagles in 2010, as well as the 4-Coin Proof Set. The individual cap on 1/2 oz coins was 15,000 coins and 39,000 sets for the 4-coin option.
On the obverse of 2010 1/2 oz Proof Gold American Eagles is the image of Lady Liberty. This iconic design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle through 1933. The reverse face of 2010 Proof Gold American Eagles includes the American bald eagle family image designed by Miley Busiek in 1986.
