The African elephant is the largest land mammal in the world. Often referred to as one species, the African elephant actually consists of two subspecies: the bush elephant and the forest elephant. The bush elephant is featured on the reverse side of the 2011 1 oz. Silver Somalian Elephant coin from the Bavarian State Mint, which is available from Silver.com.

Silver Somalian Elephant coins were first introduced in 1998, but as a part of the African Wildlife Series, the African Elephant Coin was not introduced until 2004. Images of African elephants featured on the reverse side of the coin are changed each year, giving the coins increased collectability. Enhancing the value and attraction of the coin is the limited mintage.
On the reverse side of the 2011 coin is the image of a female elephant and her calf. In a touching display, the mother leads its calf across the savanna as the young elephant holds its mother’s trunk with its own. Tall trees are visible in the background, while the sun sits high in the sky overhead. Engravings include “African Elephant” and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
The obverse side of the coin bears the coat of arms for the Republic of Somalia. The seal features a shield in the center, with a single star set in front of horizontal lines. Two jaguars hold the sides of the shield. Engravings include “Somali Republic” and the face value of the coin.
The Bavarian State Mint is one of Germany’s five state-owned mints. Founded in 1158, the Bavarian State Mint is an entity of the Free State of Bavaria and is headquartered in Munich, Germany.
