The history of the Proof Gold American Eagle is quite unique. While its bullion counterpart was introduced in 1986 with all four available weights of 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz, the proof coin was the only version with its weights phased in over time.
In 1986, the US Mint released only a 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle. These ½ oz proofs were introduced a year later in 1987, followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. In 2009, the Proof Gold Eagle program was suspended for a year amidst the turmoil of the Great Recession.
Each 2011-W ½ oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin in this Silver.com listing earned a perfect PR70 grade from the PCGS. Specimens such as these have their full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws on the surface.
Additionally, the deep-cameo designation earned by each coin denotes visual brilliance that is highlighted by a design set appearing to float above a background field. This achieved through the combination of a strong, frosted design overlaying a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse face of all Proof Gold American Eagle coins is the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. The reverse features the image of a family of bald eagles in its nest, and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
