Limited Mintage of 1,000,000 Coins!
The 2012 Canadian Silver Cougar Coin was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint as the fourth coin in its “Canadian Wildlife” coin series. This exciting collection pays tribute to Canada’s unique creatures and provides collectors with an opportunity to observe them in their natural environment. As with previous coins in the collection, each Canadian cougar coin was minted from 1 troy ounce of 99.99% fine silver. During its limited mintage only 1,000,000 coins were produced and each was given a legal tender value of $10 CAD.
Collectors are certain to hear the call of the wild when they view the artwork of this silver cougar coin. Prominently depicted on the front side is the Canadian growling cougar on the verge of attack. It stands fiercely positioned with its front legs on top of a tree limb and its pointed teeth revealed as a sign of aggression. Behind this feral feline is the rugged terrain that one might find if they were exploring the rocky terrain of the Canadian mountainside. However, the fearsome rendering of this cougar may be enough to convince viewers otherwise. In addition to this formidable creature is a ring of text along the edge of the coin. This inscription includes the nation’s name, the coin’s silver purity and the coin designer’s initials.
In contrast to its front artwork, the reverse side provides a portrait of Elizabeth II. She represents Canada’s former status as a colony under British rule. Encircling her effigy is her name as well as the Latin phrase “D.G. Regina.”
