The New Zealand Mint is often overshadowed by the neighboring Perth Mint and its wide variety of massively popular silver bullion products, but that doesn’t mean it is without its own charms. The Silver Fiji Taku series from the New Zealand Mint has quietly garnered the attention of investors in just a few short years. Today, Silver.com has the 2012 1 oz Silver New Zealand $2 Fiji Taku available in near-perfect condition.

In the South Pacific, the hawksbill turtle is a massively popular native species. Found throughout the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, the hawksbill migrates on an annual basis from the waters around Fiji to the northern coast of New Zealand’s north island.
The creatures are referred to in Fiji as the taku, taking the name for the animal from a local Fijian dialect. While these coins were issued for the nation of Fiji, they were known as the Fiji Taku. In ancient times, local populations enjoyed the hawksbill turtle as a delicacy, but now have a greater respect for it as an endangered species.
All 2012 1 oz Silver New Zealand Fiji Takus available on Silver.com today are in near-perfect condition according to the NGC. MS69 coins are characterized by the presence of the full, original luster, but also the presence of up to two minor detracting flaws on the surface.
The reverse face of all Silver Fiji Taku coins features the image of the hawksbill turtle as it swims in the water, as well as the inscription “Fiji Taku.” On the obverse is a right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. This is the last time the Fiji Taku coin would feature the Queen’s effigy.
