First introduced in 2010 as the Silver Fiji Taku, this coin series didn’t take long to gain popularity and grow in diversity. By 2012, the series included a ½ oz coin with a $1 face value (Fiji), and a 5 oz coin with a $10 face value (Fiji) in addition to this 1 oz coin. As of 2014, the coin is issued with the same design features, but is struck on behalf of the island of Niue instead.
On the reverse face of all Silver Fiji Taku coins is the image of a hawksbill turtle swimming through the water. Hawksbills are a native species throughout the South Pacific, and are noted for their ornate, brightly colored shells.
The obverse face of the coins bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured in right-profile relief, Her Majesty’s effigy is surrounded by engravings denoting her name, the nation of issue, year of issue, and face value.
All New Zealand dollars (NZD) and circulation coins are produced at the Royal Canadian Mint or Royal Mint of London. The New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned facility in Auckland, and is not associated with the national government.
