The Proof Gold American Eagle was first released the same year the series was initiated. Each year since, 1986 Gold Eagles have been minted in both the proof and bullion version, with the proof coin seeing much lower mintage numbers. For example, in 2012 a total of 667,000 1 oz Bullion Gold Eagles were produced while only 23,630 1 oz Proof Gold Eagles were minted. In comparison, only 1,301 of these proof coins were certified by the NGC to be in absolute perfect condition (PF70 UCAM).
All Proof Gold American Eagles are struck using the same design and inscriptions as the regular coins. This shows an image of Lady Liberty on the obverse, while the reverse includes an image of a family of bald eagles. The weight, purity and face value are also included on each coin. All 2012-W 1 oz Gold American Eagles NGC PF70 UCAM ship in their NGC certification slabs which display their grade, minting year and unique serial number.
