The Gold Bullion Act of 1985 authorized the Gold American Eagle coin series. Issued in both bullion and Proof versions, they are struck in 22-karat gold at the West Point Mint. To preserve the cameo finish and beauty of the Proof coins, they are fitted into capsules, which are placed into velvet display boxes. A Certificate of Authenticity is included. These Proof Gold Eagles are coveted by both collectors and investors. Right now, Silver.com has the 2012-W 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coin ready for purchase.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective capsule in a box worthy of display!
  • 27th year of issuance of the Proof Gold American Eagle coins!
  • Consists of One Troy ounce of actual gold content.
  • Bears a face value of $50 (USD) that is fully backed by the federal government.
  • Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse.
  • A Bald Eagle is featured on the reverse.
  • Includes a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.

The obverse of the 2012-W Gold American Eagle coin is based upon the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty Double Eagle design. The Saint-Gaudens design, first appearing on the Double Eagles from 1907–1933, was chosen to appear again on the Gold American Eagles in 1986. This design features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty striding forward, her hair flowing behind, carrying a torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.

The reverse of the 2012-W Gold American Eagle coin depicts the male Bald Eagle, holding an olive branch in its talons, flying towards its nest, where its eagle family awaits. Miley Busiek created this design and Sherl J. Winter sculpted it.

The US Mint sold 23,630 of the 1 oz Proof Gold American Eagle coins in 2012, less than half of the sales in 2011, which were down from the sales in 2010. This sales decline is likely reflective of the rising price per ounce that gold had been experiencing since 2001. The 2001 closing price per ounce for gold was $276.50. By 2012, the closing price per ounce for gold had skyrocketed to $1,664.00 – an almost 502% increase! Sales from 2013–2015 increased slightly as the closing price per ounce for gold fell during that time period to a closing price of $1,060.20 in 2015.

The law authorizing the creation of the Gold American Eagle coin series mandated that the gold in the coins come from US resources. The Gold Eagles are composed of 91.67% gold, and to make them more durable, the gold is combined with 3% silver and 5.33% copper. They have a W mint mark, indicating they are struck at the West Point Mint.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
