Burnished Silver Eagle coins are meticulously struck and handled by the United States Mint to create their visual brilliance. Each blank is first put into drums in large batches and burnished with a secondary material to bring a brighter shine and greater brilliance to the blanks. Each blank is then removed by a gloved hand, loaded into the coining presses, and then removed individually by gloved hand and packaged to protect the finish.

Burnished Silver Eagle coins were introduced for the first time in 2006 on the 20th anniversary of the Silver Eagle collection. The US Mint maintains the production of the coins to this day, but with much smaller mintage figures than you’ll find for the prof and bullion options in the collection.

On the obverse of all Burnished Silver American Eagle coins is Walking Liberty. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this was one of two of his creations to appear on American circulation coinage in the early 20th century. His Winged Liberty design appeared on the dime while the Walking Liberty figure featured on the half-dollar coin.

The reverse of the 2012-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle features the heraldic eagle of the United States. The American bald eagle on this side bears the national shield on its chest, arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and 13 stars above the head of the eagle. The nation of issue, face value, and a “W” mint mark are found on the reverse of the coin as well.
