Launched in 2010, the Silver Fiji Taku coin program was a bullion coin with legal tender status in Fiji. These 2013 1 oz Silver New Zealand Fiji Taku coins were the last ones produced for the nation of Fiji. Although the primary hawksbill turtle design would live on, the program was rebranded as the Hawksbill Niue bullion coin and issued for the autonomous island of Niue by the New Zealand Mint.
For the final year of the Silver Fiji Taku issue, the New Zealand Mint made a significant change to the obverse design of the coin. Gone was the right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. In its place the mint used traditional Fijian imagery to represent the island accurately on the coin design.
Each of the 2013 1 oz Silver Fiji Taku coins you purchase today is in perfect condition according to the NGC. MS70 coins have their full, original luster from the mint and feature no detracting flaws anywhere on the surface.
On the reverse is the now-familiar hawksbill turtle design. A strong, frosted finish behind the turtle gives life to the bubbles of the ocean, while a sliver of deeply-mirrored finish on the coin bears the inscription “Fiji Taku.”
The reverse for 2013 now features the coat of arms for Fiji. On either side of the crest are Fijian warriors, while images representing the local population’s seafaring history are contained within the crest. Inscriptions include “Fiji 2013” and “Two Dollars.”
