In the far-western corner of South Dakota is one of the greatest man-made treasures in the United States. The government commissioned a project in 1927 to carve the faces of some of America’s greatest president’s onto the side of a hill in the Badlands of South Dakota. The project cost $1 million and took 14 years to complete, but when it was done the faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln were etched into the side of a rocky cliff face. As part of the America the Beautiful coin series from the US Mint, the 2013 5 oz Mount Rushmore Silver coin pays homage to this monument.
The America the Beautiful coin series began as a quarter production program that paid homage to the history and natural beauty of America. The quarter series will include a total of 56 different coins depicting a historical site or natural wonder, one representing each of the 50 states, 5 US territories, and the District of Columbia.
The imagery on the 2013 5 oz Mount Rushmore ATB Silver Coin is similar to that of the quarter series, but not exactly the same. The concept of the 5 oz coins, the largest ever produced by the US Mint, came from the America the Beautiful quarter series. This particular coin, unlike the quarter for South Dakota, only features the faces of President Washington and President Jefferson.
The coin’s obverse side features the images of Presidents Washington and Jefferson as their faces are carved into the hillside. One worker can be seen suspended in front of Jefferson, working on the details of his face. Another is seen on scaffolding. The term “Mount Rushmore” is engraved above the image, while “South Dakota,” the minting year, and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum” are carved below.
On the reverse of the 2013 5 oz Mount Rushmore ATB Silver coin is the standard image found on all US quarters. President Washington’s left-profile portrait is included in the center, with engravings of “United States of America,” “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the legal tender value surrounding the image.
