Chinese lunar-themed coins are some of the hottest items in the precious metals industry right now. The 1/10 oz Gold Canadian Five Blessings coin had a unique background finish on its reverse that was not featured on other coins in the series. Like other coins, this one has the Chinese symbol for good fortune in the right-half of the coin’s reverse field, along with a circular imagery that dominates the background.
Each of the five animals featured in the design of these coins is symbolic of a different blessing. The bat represents happiness. The deer represents career success. The crane, a long life. Finally, the two magpies represent joy.
On the reverse face of the coin you’ll find all of these design features. The five animals are arranged in a descending half-moon shape that starts with the bat and ends with the magpies. Another half-moon shape slices the coin vertically, and includes the engravings of the coin’s metal content, purity, and weight.
The obverse bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Captured in right-profile relief in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, the image is included along with engravings of “Elizabeth II,” “5 Dollars,” and “2014.”
Canada’s official sovereign mint, the Royal Canadian Mint, was founded in 1908 to process gold and silver discovered in the Yukon Territories. It has struck everything from gold bars to repay British debts during World War I, to Olympic gold medals for the Vancouver Games in 2010. Today it operates two state-of-the-art facilities; the original location in Ottawa and a newer site in Winnipeg.
