Silver Somalian Elephant coins are part of a larger program from the Bavarian State Mint that includes a silver and gold version of this coin, with bullion and proof available in both precious metals. The coins were first introduced in 2004 and have since undergone numerous changes, such as the increased purity of silver to .9999 in 2016.
Somalian Elephant coins actually began life in 1999 as Zambian Elephant coins from the Bavarian State Mint. After just five years of issue, the coins were switched to Somali issue products, but little changed in the approach of the mint in striking the coins. A new obverse design is still used each year, and the coins continue to feature extremely low mintage figures compared to other major bullion programs.
The reverse of all 2014 1 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Horse Privy Coins includes the coat of arms for Somalia. This design includes a heraldic shield with the single star of Somalia featured on it, with a leopard on either side of the shield to hold it up. Engravings include “Somali Republic,” “2014” split on either side of the design field, and the face value of the coin as “100 Shillings.”
On the obverse of the 2014 Silver Somalian Elephant you’ll find the image of a family herd of African elephants wandering through the African bush. The sun rises high in the sky above a family unit of three, with a calf trailing behind the female in the back of the pack. A Horse Privy has been added in the outer rim engravings to celebrate the Year of the Horse on the Chinese Lunar Calendar for 2014.
2014 1 oz Silver Somalian Elephant Coin in this listing is in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, however you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from the striking of blanks during production at the mint.
