According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2014 marks the year of the horse: a year filled with abundant opportunities. To honor this auspicious occasion, the Perth Mint of Australia has released this special edition Silver Australian Year of the Horse Coin. Each of these stunning commemorative coins was minted from 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and assigned a legal tender value of $2 AUD. They measure 3.6 mm in width and 55.6 mm in diameter. All coins ship in brilliant uncirculated condition and will still be in their original plastic coin capsule.
Depicted on the reverse is this year’s celebrant accompanied by a fellow equine companion. The two horses are portrayed standing near a river bank beneath the shade of a Chinese white pine tree. One of them has bent over for a drink while the other one gazes across the river into the distance. From the long, flowing lines of the river to the cleanly rendered details of the horses, artist Tom Vaughan utilized many Asian design principles to help achieve a distinctly eastern aesthetic in his artwork. He finishes his design with a “Ma” or Chinese symbol for horse above the illustration and an inscription beneath it that reads, “Year of the Horse.”
Proudly displayed on the reverse side of the coin is the uncanny likeness of Queen Elizabeth II. She is featured in profile wearing her iconic tiara. The presence of her effigy serves not only as a tribute to the benevolent monarch, but also a symbol of Australia’s pride as a member of the British Commonwealth. This sense of unity between the two nation’s is further heightened by the ring of text, which links her name with Australia’s. Also included in the text are the coin’s vital statistics such as weight, purity, mintage year and denomination.
