As this year’s last release in America The Beautiful coin series, the US Mint has chosen to celebrate the Great Sand Dunes National Park which is located in the state of Colorado. The park, which is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, is one of the most famous landmarks in the state. Visitors from all over visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park to go sand boarding and sand sledding on the dunes. Others also enjoy hiking and exploring the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
On the coin’s reverse is a scene depicting a father and son who are playing in the sand at the waters edge. Complementing the background are some of the park’s sand dunes as well as a mountain peak which both overlook the creek. The phrase “E Pluribus Unum” is listed to the right of the design with markings for the park, state and minting year also noted. This information if marked: “Great Sand Dunes,” “2014,” and “Colorado.”
The coin’s obverse shows an image of George Washington as depicted by John Flanagan in 1932 for the Washington Quarter. This design depicts Washington left-facing with our country’s name listed above as “United States of America.” The phrase “In God We Trust” is listed to Washington’s right with the word “Liberty” marked to his left. The coin’s face value is also listed below Washington.
