The Perth Mint introduced the Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle in 2014 in collaboration with sculptor John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Mercanti worked for the US Mint from the start of his career as an apprentice in the 1970s until he retired as the Chief Engraver in 2010.
Silver Wedge Tail Eagle coins now have new designs of the eagle on the reverse face with each date mark. This started in 2018, with the silver bullion coins issued previously sharing designs in particular years. For example, the 2014 and 2015 coins shared the same debut design, and the 2016 and 2017 coins shared a design as well. However, the 2018, 2019, and 2020 coins each had unique designs.
The obverse of the 2014 5 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle bears an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. In this fifth-generation Australian design, Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. This image was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
On the reverse field of 2014 5 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagles is a depiction of this powerful bird in flight. The wedge tail eagle is shown flying toward its perch with both wings flexed behind its body and its powerful talons reaching out to grasp a tree trunk as its perch.
These 2014 5 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagles are available with a perfect certification. The PR70 certification is for coins with full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. The DCAM label indicates the coins showcase strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
Each of these coins from the Perth Mint is a high-relief specimen. These types of coins are struck with intense pressure several times during the coining process, with the resulting image displaying sunken fields with greater depth for the designs.
