The Perth Mint introduced the Silver Australian Koala in 2007, and alters the reverse design of the coin each year. Unlike other sovereign coin programs that use the same designs year in and year out, the Silver Koala coin features new artistry on the reverse, though the motif always focuses on koalas in their natural habitat.
Each of the 2015 1/10 oz Silver Australian Koala coins in this listing feature a variety of finishes that create a visually stunning coin. The primary design sets have a frosted finish, while an circular area around the edge of each coin face has a deeply-mirrored finish.
On the reverse side of the coin is the latest design of a koala. The marsupial is visible sitting in the crook in a tree, with its feet clutching the trunk to keep it in place and one claw grasping a branch for balance. The rolling hills of the Outback are visible in the background, with grassy fields in the middle ground.
The obverse side of the coin features the common image of Queen Elizabeth II used on all Perth Mint commemorative coins. Created by Ian Rank-Broadley, the design includes engravings of the Queen’s name, the nation of issue, and the coin’s face value.
Australia’s Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility in the country. Although it is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint, its coins are considered legal tender under the Australian Coinage Act of 1965. Each of these coins comes with a “P” mint mark to identify the mint.
