There are two stories behind the design of the Silver Mexican Libertad coin. One tale is rooted in the nation’s modern history. The Angel of Independence, featured on the obverse, serves as a reminder of Mexican strength and resolve in the face of Spanish rule during the War of Independence. The other tale is one of love and dates back to the pre-Columbian era of Central America.
Popocatepetl was a warrior who fell in love with a woman named Iztaccihuatl, the daughter of a king. Incorrectly believing he had died in battle, Iztaccihuatl is said to have died of a broken heart. Upon returning from war and learning of her fate, Popocatepetl buried his true love atop a mountain and stood guard over her body until his death. Today, their names are associated with the nation’s iconic twin volcanoes.
On the obverse side of the 2015 1/20 oz. Silver Mexican Libertad coin, the Angel of Independence stands atop a pillar in the foreground. The twin peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible in the background. The reverse side bears a depiction of the Mexican coat of arms, which includes an eagle struggling to contain a serpent in its talons and beak. Engravings on this side include a wreath and the phrase “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”
The Mexican Mint is responsible for the production of all Silver Mexican Libertad coins. First established in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, the mint is the oldest operating facility in the Americas today. Silver Libertad coins are produced in a total of seven weights each year, with four fractional-weight coins and three full-weight weight coins.
