Gold American Buffalo coins were introduced for the first time in 2006, and have been struck annually ever since in a bullion and proof version. The coins feature the iconic images from the Indian Head nickel of the early-20th century. Designed by James Earle Fraser, the images on the Indian Head nickel are considered some of the finest to appear on American coins.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image of a bison from Central Park Zoo in New York City. Black Diamond, the bison in question, lived at the zoo during the early-20th century. Engravings on this side include “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” the coin’s face value, and its weight, metal content, and purity.
The obverse side of the coin features the right-profile bust of an American Indian chieftain. The word “Liberty” is engraved on the left, and the year of minting is included along the bottom. Smaller engravings on this side include the mint mark (proof coins only) and an “F” in honor of James Earle Fraser.
Coins available in this product listing have been given a perfect grade from the NGC. The ultra-cameo designation for these coins relates to the strong, frosted finish on the design and deeply mirrored, clear background field.
The United States Mint produces its Gold American Buffalo coins at the West Point Mint and Denver Mint, though only the West Point facility strikes the proof coins.
