There are numerous animals that could lay claim to the title of “Australia’s Most Popular,” and undoubtedly the kangaroo would end up at the top of the list for many people. The kangaroo has been a part of popular culture around the world when referencing Australia, from its appearance in feature films to its association with the national football team (the Socceroos). This iconic creature is featured on the 2015 1 oz Gold Australian Kangaroo coin offered by the Perth Mint. The kangaroo has not only been a fixture of pop culture for over 20 years now, but it has also been featured on numerous gold and silver coins from the Perth Mint. For the 2015 1 oz Gold Australian Kangaroos, a brand new image of the creature has been designed. In the new image, a kangaroo is seen bounding across the open landscape of the Outback, with open marshland and an intricately designed moon in the background. Above the animal’s head, the phrase “Australian Kangaroo” is engraved, while the weight, purity, and mint year are engraved below.
On the opposite side, the customary image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is included. The right-profile portrait of the Queen is featured on all coins produced by the Perth Mint. The image of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side is surrounded by engravings including “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and the face value of the coin. This coin is also available in 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, and ½ oz weights.
The Perth Mint was once part of the Royal Mint system in Australia. Established when Great Britain controlled Australia as a colony, the Perth Mint was the third and final mint opened to process gold, silver, and other precious metals discovered on the continent. Following the closure of the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint, the Perth Mint became the lone facility in Australia responsible for processing and refining precious metals.
