The British Channel has protected Britain against utter destruction for centuries. Invading armies have failed on numerous occasions to conquer the power of the water. An enduring symbol of the Channel’s power, and in fact a personification of Britain itself, is that of Britannia. First introduced during Roman times, Britannia is alive and well today on the 2015 1 oz Silver British Britannia Coin. You can now purchase this coin from Silver.com with an MS69 grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, as part of the Early Release series. Early Release coins are those which arrive from the mint within the first 30 days of their release.
Britannia originated when the Roman Empire attempted to conquer the whole of Britain. The term began as an identifier for the island in the Latin language, but evolved into a female personification of the island and the people of Britain. Her depiction was formally adopted as an official emblem in 1707, following unification of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland. Britannia not only stood for unification, but as a symbol of power for the British Empire.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz Silver British Britannia coin is a depiction of Britannia standing guard over the English Channel. She wields a trident in her right hand and a shield in her left. On the face of the shield is the British Union Jack and the nation’s flag. Her head is covered with a Corinthian helmet. Engravings include “Britannia,” the year of minting, weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The British sovereign is encircled by the engravings “Elizabeth II,” “D’G,” “Reg’Fid’Def,” and the face value in British Pounds of the coin.
First opened in 886 as the London Mint, the Royal Mint is the official facility for the production of coins in the United Kingdom. An MS69 grade from the NGC indicates that these coins have an attractive, sharp strike, and no more than two blemishes on the face of the coin.
