Among the most unique species on the African continent you’ll find the silverback gorilla. The mountain gorilla species is found within the dense jungles and forests of the continent’s interior, and the silverback gorilla is a term used to define a mature, adult male that leads his group of gorillas.
The silverback gorilla is named for the saddle of silver fur that runs across his back. Silverback gorillas are responsible for the safety and well-being of the troop, as families are called, which can contain as many as 30 gorillas or as few as five.
These 2015 1 oz Silver Congo Silverback Gorilla coins are the first releases in a new series from Scottsdale Mint, in cooperation with the government of the Republic of Congo. Each of these coins has a proof-like finish, indicating a bullion product that has features such as matte finishes and a clear background.
On the obverse you’ll find the image of a massive mountain gorilla as it lets out a loud roar. Engravings on this face of the coin identify the coin program, and the coin’s year of issue, weight, metal content, and purity.
The reverse of the coin bears the nation’s official crest. Included on this side are engravings that read “Republique du Congo” and the coin’s face value in Francs.
Scottsdale Silver, as the mint is also known, is a private facility in Scottsdale, Arizona in the United States. The mint is well known for its green process, which most notably include refining silver sourced from the photography and manufacturing industries.
