The Silver Somalian Elephant coin has seen increasing popularity in recent years, in part because of its limited mintage, but also because of its ever-changing design on the reverse side. Originally available in just a 1 oz weight, recent years have seen the Bavarian State Mint introduce a 1 kilogram silver coin in the series. Right now, the 2015 1 Kilo Silver Somalian Elephant coin is available with a special finish on Silver.com.

Silver Somalian Elephant coins were originally introduced in 1999 as part of the African Wildlife Series for the nation of Rwanda. It wasn’t until 2004 that the coin’s nation of issue was changed to Somalia. Mintage for these coins was strictly limited in the first few years.
Currently, the mint maintains a low level of mintage for the 1 Kilogram coin. For the 2015 release, only 200 coins will be produced, lending this an unbelievably low total mintage.
Each 2015 1 Kilo Silver Somalian Elephant Coin available from Silver.com has a special antique finish. While coins from antiquity are prized for their noble beauty, modern coins can now feature that same aged look without the wait. Modern coining processes allow mints to produce coins with an antique finish, adding subtle accents and hues to the coin that create depth and character for the design.
On the reverse side of each coin you’ll find the latest depiction of the African Elephant. On the 2015 design, an adult female leads a young calf through the open fields of Africa. The obverse side features the coat of arms for the Republic of Somalia, as well as the coin’s year of minting and face value.
Germany’s Bavarian State Mint is one of its five state-owned mints. Founded near Munich in 1158, the Bavarian State Mint is one of the nation’s oldest and is controlled by the local government of the Free State of Bavaria.
