This remarkable high-relief coin features the goddess Athena, and is the second coin released in 2015 as part of the Perth Mint’s Goddesses of Olympus coin series. Each coin in the series features a stunning high-relief strike that gives the coin a 3-dimensional look and feel, with an antique finish one would expect on ancient coins.
On the reverse face of the coin is the image of Athena, with a level of detail that is almost impossible to capture with words. Athena, the Greek goddess of War and Wisdom, is featured in the center with a spear in her left arm and shield bearing Medusa’s head on its face in her right. The city-state of Athens, named after the goddess, is visible in the background, as is the Parthenon built on Acropolis Hill in dedication to Athena.
The obverse side of the coin bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Her image is surrounded by the engravings of the coin’s face value, weight, metal content, purity, and year of minting, as well as the terms “Queen Elizabeth II” and “Tuvalu.”
Australia’s Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility on the continent. Once a part of the Royal Mint system in Australia, it is the only remaining facility from the time of British imperial rule following the closure of the Sydney and Melbourne locations. Today, it is a state-owned entity of Western Australia.
