In 1920, Mexico celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first battle in its War of Independence with Spain. To commemorate that event, the Mexican Mint unveiled a Centenario gold coin in 1921 with historic imagery that evoked memories of the conflict and national pride. Images from the Centenario coin were revived and reimagined with modern technology when the Silver Mexican Libertad coin was first struck in 1982.
The Silver Mexican Libertad is struck by the Mexican Mint in seven total weights each year, with three full-weight coins and four fractional-weight coins. In the average year, the 2 oz. Silver Mexican Libertad is among the more in-demand coins in the series. All coins in the series feature the same design on the obverse side, that of the Angel of Independence.
On the reverse side of the full-weight coins features the modern coat of arms of Mexico, surrounded by historical depictions of the symbol. The fractional-weight coins bear only the modern design of the coat of arms due to the lack of space to accommodate the other images.
The obverse side of the 2015 coin features the Angel of Independence in the center, with the tower volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background. On the reverse of the 2 oz. coin, the modern coat of arms is encircled by various historical depictions.
La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, or the Mexican Mint, is a decentralized entity within the federal government of Mexico. It bears sole responsibility for the production of Mexican sovereign coins, including the Silver Mexican Libertad.
