Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge covers 15,978 acres of land along the Atlantic Coast of Delaware, and is situated in Kent County, just off the shores of Delaware Bay. The area was established as a protected site on March 16, 1937 using federal duck stamp funds to purchase the land from local owners. The refuge provides a stopover point and breeding ground for ducks, geese, egrets, herons, and other waterfowl traveling the Atlantic Flyway.
The 2015 5 oz Bombay Hook ATB Silver Coin is the fourth released in the 2015 production cycle, and the 29th overall coin in the America the Beautiful series. The 56-coin series was introduced in 2010, and is scheduled to run through 2021. Each coin features a unique reverse design representing one of the 50 US states, five territories, and Washington DC.
On the reverse side of the Bombay Hook ATB Silver Coin, a great blue heron is depicted standing along the shores of Delaware Bay, as a great egret dips its beak in the water in search of food.
The obverse side features the common image of President George Washington, as found on circulation quarters. This image is a refined version of John Flanagan’s 1932 quarter design, which was itself based upon a 1786 bust of Washington by sculptor William Cousins.
