On a crisp autumn day in 1777, the United States of America scored its first major victory on the field of battle. The Battle of Saratoga marked the first major military victory of the Continental Army over the forces of the British Empire. Today, the site is maintained and remembered as the Saratoga National Historical Park, and is featured on the 2015 5 oz Saratoga ATB Silver Coin, available today on Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Consists of five ounces of .999 fine silver.
  • Issued a face value of $.25 (USD) by the federal government.
  • Struck by the United States Mint in Denver and Philadelphia.
  • Honors the Battle of Saratoga.
  • Represents the state of New York in the ATB series.
  • Approved for inclusion in Precious Metal IRAs.
  • Coins ship in capsules (individual), tubes (multiples of 10), or Monster Boxes (multiples of 100).

The Battle of Saratoga took place in and around Stillwater, in Saratoga County, New York. On this field of battle, the forces of the Continental Army under General Horatio Gates convincingly defeated a major British Army division under the control of General John Burgoyne. The park covers 3,392 acres of land and was established on June 1, 1938.

America the Beautiful is a 56-coin series that represents each of the US states, territories, and federal districts with a unique reverse coin design. Each jurisdiction in the United States was allowed to choose a site through a collaborative selection process to represent it on the ATB Silver coin series.

On the obverse side of each ATB Silver coin is the image of the nation’s first elected leader, President George Washington. His left-profile portrait, as featured on all American quarters, is based upon an original sculpture created by William Cousins in 1786.

The reverse of this coin features a close-up image of the moment when General Burgoyne surrendered his sword to General Gates in a symbolic gesture of defeat. A special engraving on this side reads “British Surrender 1777.”

Each of these coins is produced by the US Mint as part of the America the Beautiful coin series. The Saratoga ATB Silver Coin is the fifth coin in the 2015 production cycle, and the 30th coin in the overall series.
