The Perth Mint continues its celebration of the Chinese Zodiac with the eighth animal in the Zodiac, the goat. The mint previously celebrated the Year of the Goat in 2003, the last time it appeared on the Chinese calendar; and this time the Perth Mint has an all new design to celebrate those born under this sign. The family of goats on the coin’s reverse have intricately designed and stamped long hair. Natasha Muhl created the image which features three goats grazing in a field. The middle goat has its head down, grazing calmly on the grass. Meanwhile, the other two hold their head’s aloft in vigilance. The Year of the Goat celebrates birthdates in 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, and 2015. On the coin’s obverse, Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is featured.
Muhl’s family of goats takes center stage on the reverse side of the 2015 5 oz Silver Australian Goat coin. Stamped into the background of the image is the Chinese symbol for goat, with the phrase “Year of the Goat” stamped above the family. On the obverse side, Queen Elizabeth II’s image is surrounded by the words “Elizabeth II, Australia” on the top and the weight, purity, face value, and year of minting on the bottom.
The Perth Mint is the last remaining mint from the Royal Mint of London’s original mint system in Australia. The facility in Perth is responsible for the production of almost all circulation and commemorative coinage in Australia. The 2015 5 oz Silver Australian Goat is considered legal tender in Australia, but its available today in brilliant uncirculated condition.
