Silver American Eagle coins were first struck by the US Mint in 1986. For the first 20 years of the coin program, only bullion and proof coins were available. In 2006, on the 20th anniversary of the program’s launch, a new burnished coin was introduced.
Struck only at the West Point Mint, these burnished coins are produced with a unique coining process. Rather than using burnished dies to strike blanks, each blank is burnished and struck multiple times with a standard die. The blanks are hand loaded into the coining press.
On the reverse side is the standard image of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty. Designed in 1916, the image depicts Lady Liberty as she strides toward the setting sun. Her image is representative of the nation’s constant march toward a brighter future.
The obverse side features John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle image. Highlighted by 13 stars over the eagle’s head to represent the original colonies, this design was created by the US Mint’s chief engraver specifically for this coin program.
United States Mint production of Burnished Silver American Eagle coins is limited each year. These particular coins earned near-perfect SP69 grades because each contains its full, original luster and no more than two detracting marks. As part of the First Strike Series, these coins arrived at the PCGS depository within the first 30 days of production.
