Silver American Eagle coins bear the iconic image of Lady Liberty on the obverse face as designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. Weinman was one of a number of American artists, sculptors, and engravers commissioned by the federal government in the early 19th century to help reinvent the design of American coins. Weinman studied under the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the man whose Liberty design transformed gold coinage in America and graces the sister coin to this, the Gold American Eagle.
In Weinman’s design, Lady Liberty is featured walking toward the setting sun with the American flag draped over her shoulders. The imagery is meant to represent the nation’s constant strive to find a brighter future.
On the obverse side of each coin in this Gem Roll you’ll find Weinman’s design of Lady Liberty, along with the engravings of “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the year of issue. The reverse of each coin bears John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design. Additional engravings on this side include “United States of America” and the coin’s face value, weight, metal content, and purity.
Each coin in this 20-coin Gem Roll from the NGC is considered an uncirculated product, which means you’ll find no signs of wear and tear. Some coins in this condition do exhibit breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
