Gold American Eagle coins were authorized in 1985, the same year as its silver counterpart, but through separate legislation. The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 established the parameters for a coin program that featured bullion and proof versions, four weights (1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz), and required that all coins consist only of gold sourced from within the US.
The bullion version of the Gold American Eagle hit the ground running in 1986, offering the 1 oz coin and all three fractional-weight coins in the first year. By comparison, the proof program phased in the fractional-weight coins over the next two years of production.
Each of the 2016 ½ oz Gold American Eagle Coins in this product listing is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins with a BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but may feature breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the striking process.
On the obverse of each coin is the image of Lady Liberty. Featured in full-length figure, this image was created by Saint-Gaudens in 1907, and featured on the obverse of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse features an image from monumental sculptor Miley Busiek. Her family of bald eagles on the Gold American Eagle is just one of her many nationally recognized accomplishments, which also include public monuments such as the “Peace Through Strength Globe” design.
