Lunar Series II coins were introduced for the first time in 2008. The Perth Mint’s original Lunar Series II program was introduced in 1996, and the 12-year program was so popular that the mint immediately launched a follow-up program. Lunar Series II coins feature all-new designs that are more complex and available in more weights.
The 2016 Gold Australian Monkey coin series boasts a total of eight different weights in the bullion version. These 2016 1/20 oz Gold Australian Monkey coins are the smallest weight available, with three other fractional-weight coins minted along with a 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilogram coin.
On the obverse side of each coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. A new effigy of Her Majesty is available for use on Commonwealth coins, but the Perth Mint has opted to continue with the fourth-generation depiction of the Queen in order to maintain continuity on the obverse of all its Lunar Series II coins.
The reverse side bears the unique Gold Australian Monkey image from artist Ing Ing Jong. In a similar depiction to the silver version of the program, the 2016 1/20 oz Gold Australian Monkey bears the image of a single adult monkey on the branch of a peach tree as it looks over its shoulder at a peach hanging from the branch above.
The Perth Mint has established an unlimited mintage system for the Gold Australian Monkey coin. Perth Mint will strike the coins as long as demand persists through the end of 2016, at which point striking will cease.
