Silver Mexican Libertad coins are highly coveted each year for their beautiful designs and .999 purity. The low mintage of the coins, especially compared to the likes of the Silver American Eagle and Silver Canadian Maple Leaf, put the coin in a position of high demand as well. Right now, the 2016 ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertad coin is available from Silver.com in BU condition.

The Silver Libertad program began in 1982 as a 1 oz bullion coin only. The program underwent two periods of expansion. The first came in 1991 with the addition of four fractional-weight coins, which included the ½ oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and the ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertad. Five years later the Mexican Mint added a 2 oz and 5 oz option.
Throughout the mintage history of the fractional weights, all four have retained a relatively level volume of demand compared to one another. For example, in 2015 the difference between the highest and lowest mintage of fractional weights was just 3,900 coins. The ½ oz is generally the least popular of the fractional-weight Silver Libertads, while the 1/20 oz and 1/10 oz are the most popular.
Each 2016 ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coin listed here is available as a Brilliant Uncirculated specimen. The BU condition of these coins indicates a lack of wear and tear, but the possible presence of minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the coining process.
On the obverse you’ll find the image of Winged Victory in the center of the design, with the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distant background. Engravings include the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, as well as the Mexican Mint mark.
The reverse of the 2016 ¼ oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coin features the modern coat of arms for Mexico. In the official seal, an eagle does battle with a serpent. Surrounding the design are the words “Estados Unidos Mexicanos,” which translates as United States of Mexico.
