The Gold Australian Monkey is available in four fractional weights and four additional weights, including 2 oz, 10 oz, 1 kilogram, and this 2016 1 oz Gold Australian Monkey coin. While the other coins in this series are available with unlimited mintages, the 1 oz coin is the only to feature a limited mintage. Only 30,000 1 oz coins will be struck by the Perth Mint in 2015 for release.
On the reverse side of the coin you’ll find the image of a lone monkey sitting in a peach tree, glancing back over its shoulder at a piece of fruit hanging behind it. Engravings include the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark. Below is the engraving “Year of the Monkey,” and the Chinese symbol for monkey is featured as well.
The obverse bears the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II from Ian Rank-Broadley. Designed in 1998, this image is now outdated with the release of a new fifth-generation design of Her Majesty from Jody Clark in July 2015. However, the Perth Mint is continuing to use this image to maintain a sense of consistency in the design of Lunar Series II coins.
Each of the 2016 1 oz Gold Australian Monkey coins in this Silver.com product listing is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. A BU coin has no signs of wear and tear, but it may feature breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the striking process.
Perth Mint was founded in 1898 as the final of three British Royal Mint facilities in Australia. It is not associated with the federal government’s Royal Australian Mint.
