As former President Franklin D. Roosevelt put it, a “date that will live in infamy”. Imperial Japan launched a surprise attack on December 7, 1941 on the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, located in Oahu, Hawaii. Imperial Japan closed in on Pearl Harbor just before 8 a.m. and launched an attack on the United States Navy. While horrible losses were sustained that day for the U.S. Navy, many of the Navy’s aircraft carriers were not actually present at the time of attack; therefore, they were saved from Imperial Japan. The U.S. would then enter World War II and, eventually, strike back at Japan.
On the obverse of the 2016 1 oz Gold Tuvalu Pearl Harbor Coin is the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was originally designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. This portrait of the Late Queen has been the featured obverse design on many bullion products produced around the world. This 2016-release also shows certain specs about the coin on the obverse, including its purity, release year, weight, value, and country of origin.
On the reverse of the 2016 1 oz Gold Tuvalu Pearl Harbor Coin are two Japanese aircraft shown flying over Pearl Harbor. The viewer will see battleships scattered across the sea in the background. Two inscriptions are also included on this side of the coin: “75TH ANNIVERSARY” and “PEARL HARBOR MCMXLI”.
