When gold was first discovered at Sutter’s Mill near Sacramento, California in 1848, it sparked a gold rush that would reshape the fortunes of both California and the United States as a whole. The California Gold Rush peaked in 1852, and by that point in time some $2 billion worth of the precious metal had been extracted from the region. Right now, the 2016 1 oz Silver Proof Niue Gold Rushes of the World California Coin is available for purchase on Silver.com.

Coin Jewels is planning the release of four coins in total in its Gold Rushes of the World Series. The California Gold Rush is the most well-known of its type in the United States, and arguably one of the largest in the history of the world. Subsequent designs are expected highlight the Klondike rush in Canada, Siberia rush in Russia, and South Africa’s Witwatersrand.
Each coin in this series features a patented transparent capsule that includes a leaf of 24-karat gold. Its inclusion allows investors to collect not just .999 fine silver, but also a shaving of pure gold not available in its fineness in nature.
That transparent capsule is brilliantly used in the reverse design of the coin, which includes the image of a panhandler kneeling at the side of a creek using his pan to try and capture some gold nuggets from the slowly rushing waters. Engravings include only the identifying phrase of “California Gold Rush 1848.”
On the obverse of the coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II, captured in right-profile relief. The transparent capsule and its gold leaf is also visible on this side, as are the engravings of the coin’s nation of issue, year of issue, face value, weight, purity, and metal content.
Coin Jewels produces a wide variety of precious metal products that range from medals and numismatic coins to chips and tokens for the gaming industry.
