All 2016 1 oz Silver British Monkey coins available for purchase today are in near-perfect condition according to the NGC. An MS69 coin is characterized by the presence of its full, original mint luster, but also a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
These particular bullion coins are unique in that they have a deep, proof-like finish. Characteristic of coins struck early in the bullion production process, deep, proof-like appearances include the presence of a mirrored surface similar to that found on proof coins. As part of the Early Release schedule, these coins arrived at an NGC approved depository within the first 30 days of issue.
On the reverse side is the Royal Mint’s unique Year of the Monkey design. Created by British-Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho, the creator of the two previous Lunar Series coins from the Royal Mint, this side features a pair of monkeys swinging from tree branches.
The obverse features the latest, fifth-generation right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy was updated by Jody Clark in 2015, and at the age of 33 Clark is the youngest artist ever to render a portrait of the Queen for British currency.
Originally founded in 886 as the London Mint, today the Royal Mint is one of the most respected facilities in the world. It is responsible for the production of British coinage, as well as that of other Commonwealth nations.
