The African lion is one of the most iconic species from the continent, behind only the African elephant in terms of popularity and visibility on the global stage. One of the newest coin series from the African continent is the Silver Congo Series, an ongoing series in its second release year. Right now, the 2016 1 oz Silver Congo African Lion coin is available on Silver.com.

The first African Lion Series coin was introduced in 2015 as a coin issued for the nation of Burundi. After just one year though, the coin’s nation of issue has shifted to the Republic of Congo. This is not unheard of, as the Silver Somalian Elephant was first issued for Zambia from 1999 to 2003.
Each of the 2016 1 oz Silver Congo African Lion coins in this listing earned a perfect certification from the NGC. Coins in this condition exhibit full, original mint luster. You’ll find no detracting flaws on the surface of this coin either.
On the obverse is the latest African Lion design to feature on the coin. In keeping with the previous design theme, a male and female lion from a pride are featured. This year’s design shows the pair walking the Savannah as they stalk prey in the distance. Instead of the text block used on the 2015 coin, the words “African Lion” are now engraved along the outer edge of the design field to intrude less on the design set.
The reverse face of the Silver Congo African Lion bears the coat of arms for the Republic of Congo. In addition to the seal, engravings include the French-language name of the nation as “Republique du Congo,” and the coin’s year of issue, face value, weight, purity, and metal content.
Each of these coins was minted by the Sunshine Minting company of Couer d’Alene, Idaho. The privately-owned company struck just 50,000 of these coins in total for 2016.
