The newest coin in the Rwandan Wildlife Series is now available for purchase, and one of the continent’s small fury creatures has been chosen to represent the ninth design in the program. The meerkat, famous on American television sets for the Meerkat Manor reality series, is a small rodent that is found throughout the continent. Rwandan Wildlife Series coins live up to their name in a manner that other African coins do not in terms of design. While the Somalian Silver Elephant is marketed as an African Wildlife Series coin, it only features the African elephant in its design from one year to the next.
Conversely, Rwandan Wildlife Series coins feature a common background theme, with a different animal species highlighted on the obverse each year. The background of all obverse designs includes an outline of the African continent. In the lower-left design field there is a new creature highlighted each year, and all creatures are native to the continent.
The 2016 Rwandan Meerkat coins available to you right now on Silver.com are near-perfect coins according to the NGC. Coins with an MS69 grade exhibit full, original mint luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Examples include miniscule contact marks, but all are found outside the primary focal areas of the coin.
On the obverse you’ll find the shared background design found on all Rwandan Wildlife Series coins, along with the special 2016 Meerkat design in the lower left. Engravings include “African Ounce” and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
The reverse features a multitude of engravings in Kinyarwanda, the local dialect of tribes from Rwanda. These engravings include “Central Bank of Rwanda” and the coin’s face value, and encircle the coat of arms for the nation which was redesigned to its current form in 2001.
